DIY Personalized Coat Rack

For round 2 {the Mod Podge round} of the One Crafty Contest at One Artsy Mama I decided to work on something that might just help this growing family of mine stay organized.

Well....we will see how that goes, but at least I have something pretty to look at ;)

For this project, I used these things:
1x2ft board {I found a perfectly good stack of these on the side of the road!}
 3 Unfinished wood frames from Michael's {$1 each}
 1/2 inch Decorative trim from Michaels
Acrylic craft paint, color "Mississippi Mud"
Flat interior paint, color Venice Beach {not pictured}
Matte Finish Mod Podge
Scrap book paper
Velcro { I went with the industrial strength, I found this at Wal-Mart}
6 Coat hooks, also found at Wal-Mart

I started by painting and distressing the board....

Then I painted the sides of the frame with acrylic craft paint

Then it was time to break out the Mod Podge!!
{sorry, I get a little excited about Mod Podge ;) }

1. I painted a thin layer of Mod Podge over the entire surface of the unfinished frame
2. I then put it down onto the underside of the scrapbook paper
3. I don't have a fancy tool to smooth out the paper, so I always use my trust rolling pin!
4. After the Mod Podge has dried and the paper is firmly attached to the frame I trim away most of the excess.
* This is one of my favorite tips for Mod Podge and paper*
To make sure you have a nice clean edge, use a nail file and work in a downward motion. After a few time of doing this over the edge the excess paper will tear off in a perfect straight edge!

Here's a closer look

For the inside area of the frame I did the same trick with my {worn out} nail file

After that...I painted a thin layer of Matte Finish Mod Podge over the entire surface of the frame, and it was time to add the painted decorative trim.
I have a small miter box that I got at Michael's for this job

Here you can see all the pieces layed out before they were glued into place

Are you ready for my FAVORITE part of the project??

to attach the picture frames..I used....

Sorry for being overly excited....but I did feel like a regular genius when I thought of it, haha!

This way, as my kiddos grow, I will have a easy way to change out their pictures!
{see...I told you...pure genius}

After attaching the coat hooks with screws, it was ready to hang

PS: As I am writing this tutorial, I just found out I made it to round 3 in the One Crafty Contest!!
Thank you soooo much to all that voted for me!

DIY Crocheted Beaded Wrap Jewelry

I had such a good time trying out this new skill for round one of the One Craft Contest over at One Artsy Mama !

I was inspired by this necklace in a Ralph Lauren add that I saw in People Magazine {style edition}

My oh so patient Mother in law taught me how to do a basic crochet chain stitch without a hook and I was off from there!

If you are a beginner like me, you may want to watch this little video to get you started.

 I tried taking pictures of the process but I confused myself so I know they wouldn't help you at all....
the other option is asking my Mother in law if she could come to your house and teach you ;)

This is what you will need:

I start by taping off the end of the thread, twist the tape to make it easy to add your beads

After you have added about 40 beads { I am showing a bracelet here...add more beads for a necklace }

Chain stitch about 5 stitches and then it's time to add a bead....
pull op a bead that you have loaded on the the thread and tightly stitch it into place

make 3 to 4 stitches between each bead, continue until you have added all the beads

After you have added all the beads, cut about 4 inches from the last stitch and tie it off in a tight knot with the beginning loop...

Wrap and wear!

DIY Teacher Gift

Summer is near, and I know a certain momma that will be soooo excited to have all three of her kiddos at home!!

I also know that our teachers will be ready for their much needed break too!

This is what we decide to do for Nola's teacher this year, I sure hope she loves it!

We decided on a Garden theme, and filled a basket with garden goodies for her. My favorite part of her gift is this Mod Podge transfer painted flower pot.

Here's What you will need to make one too:

and silly me.... you will need some Mod Podge too, matte and glossy finish { I don't know why in the world I forgot to add that to the picture!}

For this project, I used my favorite Mod Podge Transfer technique so you will need your image to be reversed..... you can right click on this one to save, just resize and print using Microsoft Word

I also added some pretty butterfly clip art too...

First, you'll need to paint your flower pot, I used Leaf Green acrylic paint.
Then, cut out your transfers...cut them as close to the design as possible and paint on a layer of matte finish Mod Podge.

Place the transfers, design side down, smooth out any bumps or bubbles and allow to dry completely {usually about an hour or so}

Once it has dried, dip your fingers into water and slowly start to rub the paper away

After removing all the paper, I painted a coat of Glossy finish Mod Podge

In her Garden basket we added some summer time garden essentials ;)

Watering can, gloves, hand shovels, sheers, mosquito spray, Forget me not flower seeds, and Lemonade mix with cups.....

What do you think? Would you like getting a gift like this?

Happy Summer!

Our Handprints are Published! Let's Celebrate with a Giveaway!

Near the end of last year I got an email from Lisa, senior editor at Thomas Nelson publishing company....the email was about one of our family projects that was pinned on Pinterest....

It is one of my all time favorite projects, and boy did it make it's rounds on Pinterest! It was so neat stumbling upon my little family's hand prints and seeing it pinned so many times!

It caught Lisa's eye, and she emailed to tell me that it would be perfect for a book written by Pastor Dave Stone called,  Building Family Ties through Faith, Love, and Laughter.

How exciting, right??
It didn't take me long to realize what a great opportunity this would be, how exciting that we will have such a great memory of our family doing this project together!

There it is on page 11 !!

I'm still sort of amazed at the doors that God has opened for us this past year.... when things like this happen, it feels like a gentle reminder that I am doing what HE wants me to be doing...and that just makes me smile : D

And, how about this??
 When I sent in the paperwork for the release and tax info to Lisa, it turns out that we live in the same exact town...yep, out of all the pictures on Pinterest, she found mine and we are practically neighbors! Small World!

So...because I am so thrilled by this, and I love sharing what makes me happy with you....

It's Giveaway time!!

Tasty Tuesday...fruity pebble treats

Happy Tuesday!

This is one of my sweet Nola girl's favorite treats....
She wanted me to share it with all of you here too :)

{perfect fruity summer snack}

Here's what you need:

2 tablespoons butter
2 cups mini marshmallows { or about 1/2 of a 10oz bag }
3 cups Fruity Pebbles

Melt the butter in a heavy saucepan, stir in marshmallows. Keep stirring constantly until the marshmallow mixture is melted completely, remove from heat and fold in Fruity Pebbles.

Spoon the mixture into a buttered casserole dish, use any size you like...larger for thinner bars and a smaller dish for thicker bars.

Dab a little butter on your fingers, and press the mixture firmly into the dish. Set aside for 30 minutes or so to let them cool.

Slice into bars and enjoy!

I'm glad I let Nola talk me into making these...hehehe

{ I kind of love them too...with a glass of lemonade}

Thanks so much for stopping by today!
