A Letter To my 18 Year Old Self....

Talking to a friend today, she told me about writing a letter to a great girl that just turned 18. As she wrote her letter of encouragement, she realized that she was talking to her 18 year old self...what she would have loved someone to say to her then.....

Her letter made me think....
what would I tell my 18 year old self......

You are 18 now...the world at your finger tips. I know how excited you are to get out there and change the world, but before you go.....

Here are a few things I wish you would have known then.......

Before you get on that plane, turn around and give your momma and sister just one more hug. I know they called for passengers to board, but give them one more hug. You don't realize this now, but you are going to miss them more than you ever knew possible. You are going to tell yourself, and everyone around you that you are fine...but trust me, give them one more hug....the plane can wait...
One day, you'll know that they were praying for you every night and were scared to death to let you go, but they still cheered the loudest at everything you did, because to them....you are something special...

Don't forget your friend....you know the one that always told you that you would do amazing things? Believe her.....and be sure to tell her thank you for never failing to forgive you for taking her for granted.
And about friends.....you will learn that it will never matter how many you have, but having one that matters makes all the difference.

Be careful with your words....they do in fact hurt. Take time to think things out, because once it is said, it can never be taken back.....

Enjoy the beauty all around you....don't take it for granted. One day you will want to go back to all of these places just to make sure they are real and to make sure you weren't dreaming.....and take pictures too. One day you will wish you had....

Boys....oh, boys.....you will have your heart broken by a few.....but one day, sweet girl, you will have a few boys in your life that will tell you they love you 10 times a day.
One will call you his wife, and the other two will call you mommy....and then you will know that there are no other boys in the whole world that will ever matter as much as they do....

Oh....and don't worry about getting older....one day, and I know you won't believe this now....but, there will be a girl that makes you feel young again. She will look so much like you, you will feel like you are watching yourself growing up all over again. She will have your hair....and your eyes.....and your silly sense of humor. She will be the reason you want to be a better person.
She is going to call you mommy....and when she says it for the first time, it will take your breath away....

I am almost finished now...and I'll let you be on your way....but remember this....

YOU are an amazing child of God....nothing you will do could change that.
Just know that life won't be perfect, but it will be good and it only gets better, you just wait and see.....
 handle it with care

I liked it, so I....... put a pin on it

Pinned it
Made it
Now, I gotta get the T-shirt....

I added, to my every growing list of boards on pinterest, a
 board

We are already 21 days into January...it was time I got started!

I started with a project that didn't have me running out to the store to buy supplies...
Inspired by THIS PIN , I made.....
Valentine's Day Scratch off Messages.....

I started by using  Picnik (soooo sad that they are doing away with my beloved Picnik) to create a few sweet little cards, I printed them out on card stock...

Next, although the tutorial called for contact paper,  (I didn't have any) so instead, I used matte finish scotch tape to tape off the center square where the message will be hidden....

Then, it was time to paint over the message...I used 1 part liquid dish washing detergent to 2 parts gray acrylic paint

I painted over the messages and let them dry....{well, I actually used the blow dryer to dry them, I'm a little impatient at times}

As you can see, they aren't perfect...a few bubbles here and there, but my little Valentine sure did love them!

Overall...I am pretty happy with my first pinterest project of 2012!

So.....do tell....
have you tackled any pinterest projects yet?

I've already got all the supplies for my next one...stay tuned ;)

DIY Magnet Chalkboard.....

This week I have had a lot of fun....with really bright colors....

No, they aren't for my house, remember I told you that I am afraid of color??
{I am learning to get over that fear, but more on that later}

Today, I want to show you how I made this.....

DIY Magnet Chalkboard

This past week on Facebook I shared a picture of the party favors I had been working on for a super sweet girl....

Her birthday party is this Saturday, and I found that I loved working with these colors so much that I wanted to keep the theme going

I started with this metal Christmas sign that I forgot to put away with the rest of my decorations...Christmas decorations can be sneaky like that.....

I painted it with chalkboard paint....

To add her name I used another transfer trick...first I printed out her name in the size and font that I liked.....

Next, I turned the image over and colored in with chalk....

after that I put the image right side up on the chalkboard and wrote over the words in pencil. I was left with a perfect transfer to paint in her name...

once I got it all painted in, I made some matching magnets... I have done something like this before, you can read about that HERE

So....what do you think?

And because I was having so much fun, and my paints were already out, I painted a fun zebra striped picture for her too....

I had more fun than I should be allowed to, haha! I sure do hope she likes it!

With the Confidence of a Four Year Old.....

I want to do things with the confidence of a four year old.....

Allow me to explain.....

You see this sweet boy?
He belongs to me....and one day he will belong to the world, but for now, I like to think of him as all mine.

Sometimes we have conversations that go just like this.....

momma, do you know if we could find a pond that is frozen?

Well, I don't know. Maybe we could. Why?

Well, I need you to buy me some ice skates and if you found me a frozen pond I could go ice skating

Hmmm....that sure does sound like fun, doesn't it? But you have never gone ice skating before, what if you fall down?

Oh, I am so good at ice skating!

Oh, you are? How do you know?

because I just do! I am pretty great at everything.....

See what I mean?
Confidence, the boy has confidence.

I like to think that I have helped him with this...I've been a loud cheering section for my children. Loud enough that they hear me and more than that, they believe me. But eventually you have to give your kids to the world, no I don't mean give them away....I just mean you have to let them learn their own way in the world. They start school, make friends, become more and more independent....and somewhere in the middle of all of that the confidence starts to slip. They are no longer in the bubble of that one woman cheering section.
They learn that they may not be great at everything....but it has always been my prayer, as their momma, that they at least try.

So...as I cheer for my "babies" I am starting to think that maybe I should have the confidence of a four year old too. I too often don't try things because...guess what, you won't believe this....but I am not great at everything....and this fear of not being great keeps me from trying.

And then I remember....
I still have a one woman cheering section of my own, and she would want be to try....even if I fail....she would want me to try. And just as I am with my own babies...it's in the "trying" that makes me so proud.

Guess I learned that from the best.....and when I grow up, I want to be just like her.....

Why am I such a chicken?

As I took down all of my fun and festive Christmas decorations this year, I realized something for the first time.....

Our living room is pretty boring.

Plain and simple, I am a chicken when it comes to color....
ask anyone who knows me and they would tell you my day to day wardrobe consists of neutrals, neutrals....and a few more neutrals....

It suits me, I'm an earthy girl....my very name, "Carmella" in a name book means God's garden.
Earthy....neutral and earthy.....

But it's due time I added a little color to our living room so when I saw that Megan from Little Blue Prints was offering help to poor souls just like me, I jumped at the chance!
The idea is....she wants to practice her interior decorating skills with someone she doesn't know....you know, to find out if she can tackle other jobs outside of her friends and family.

My mission involves:

taking lots and lots of pictures of my living room
answering questions about my personal style
and to tell her about my level of DIY skills

In return, she is going to pull together an inspiration board to  HELP ME!!

I am super excited to get started and I thought I would let you all take a tour of my living room as it is now....so that later, after she's finished guiding me into making it fabulous I could share the after pictures with you all too!

So...here we go.....

Welcome to our home.....
this is the view of our living room as you walk in the front door, the dining room is straight ahead,
come on in.....

If you will turn your attention slightly to the left, you will see a view into our living area....

And, a little more to the left, you will find our big ole' comfy chair......

And here is a look at the TV wall that I am in need of the most help with.....

Follow, follow....here is the view looking from the hallway....

And, if you come on into the dining room...this is the view of the living room from there....

Here's a look facing the hallway.....

Here is a look at the front wall with our big windows...our house faces the east so this is the best room to see the sunrise...

Our house was built in 1945 so there are a lot of great details in the craftsmanship....did you notice the cool arch ways? The walls are all plaster and the ceilings curve at the top...no straight edge at all.

Also original to the house is this beautiful light fixture...

So, there you have it...our plain, yet lovable living room
Thanks for taking a tour with me....

As I was thinking about the colors that I would like to add, I started looking around and I took this picture of Liam's bouncy seat....

I really love these colors together...I still have my beloved neutrals with the addition of that beautiful blue
So, I went where I always go for inspiration these days....

Pinterest....

These are a few things I found that had this same color pallet....

So...it's official...it's time for a change!
And I am so excited!

Stay tuned.......

A present for me...and a discount for you!

For Christmas, from a precious friend, I got a beautiful handmade picture frame for little Liam's room. You all know me well enough to know that handmade just makes me happy!
So...I went right on over to the Etsy shop where she ordered it from to let her know how much I loved it...

doesn't he look so handsome in his frame :)
Little Blue Prints has such a cute selection of  handmade items........

And...... because I love all of you,
I begged.... I  pleaded for a discount for my readers.....well, honestly, all I did was use my manners and ask nicely...and because she is so nice, she said yes!

You can use the code carmella15 to receive 15% off of your total from anything in the Little Blue Prints shop (excluding shipping)

Here are a few of my other favorites....

lets play tag owl carry blankie

lets play tag baby blankie

I think I see a new blankie in Mr. Liam's future....he has become such a blankie boy, and he sleeps like a champ as long as he has something in his hand so I know he would love one of these too!

The Things We Want to Remember......

When I was 18, I moved from Alabama to San Diego. I moved there to join AmeriCorp, a domestic Peace Corps....I lived and worked with lots of other "kids" that wanted to sort of change the world while we were figuring out what we wanted to do with the rest of our lives.
As I flew away from my momma, I remember thinking... "I am really doing this!? I really hope I never forget how exciting this feels...."
During a layover in Atlanta, I met Corey. He was heading out to San Diego too and we became fast friends. He was the guy that made everyone want to be his friend...and by the time we landed in San Diego, I already knew something very important about Corey....he loved taking pictures.
As the weeks passed and we had some time to explore our new digs....I remember Corey always saying, "Man....I wish I had my camera for this!"
He said this about everything....and I do mean everything....the taco stand (he had never heard of fish tacos) the pier, the trolley station...pretty much every place we went. And the best part was Corey's camera was a Polaroid. What can I say, he liked instant gratification, who doesn't?

What I learned from Corey is that as much as I just knew I was going to remember all of those times and places...I don't..... and "Man I wish I had my camera for that!"

These are the things from the past few weeks that I did have my camera for...albeit, my camera phone took all of the pictures, at least I took them...and looking back in a year, or ten years from now...I will be glad that I did....

See what I mean...lots of good stuff here, and who would ever want to forget that?

Happy Saturday sweet friends....I hope this day has found you with lots of things that you want to remember too....
