Printed Fabric Covered Notebook

For round 3 of the One Crafty Contest at One Artsy Mama, we had to use fabric?!

For those of you who know me well....you know I don't sew.

I was a little stumped for a bit....
but then it came to me...

Did you know that you can print fabric with your home printer?? I didn't know if it would work, but I am so happy that I tried it....I now have close to 100 ideas of what to do next!

To make one of these, this is what you will need

Fabric, Composition Notebook, Heat-n-Bond, Iron, and Scissors

First, spend some time looking at clip art that you want on your cover. The Graphics Fairy has a ton of vintage goodness to choose from..so that's a great place to start.
Once you have an image that you like, you can use PicMonkey to add text and move things around where you like them

Next cut your fabric and Heat-n-bond down to fit inside your printer. Follow the directions for the Heat-n-Bond, and iron it onto the fabric.

Put the fabric, Heat-n-Bond side up into your printer and print

After you have printed your fabric, remove the backing and place it nice and neat to the binding edge. The fabric can over hang around the notebook's edges, they will be easy to trim once you have it ironed into place

Trim away any excess fabric

To add the twine around the cover, I used a single hole punch about one inch down at the top and bottom of the notebook

And then....it was all about the details...

I painted the binding with Gold Metallic acrylic craft paint...

I added beads, charms and handstamped metal....

So...what do you think?

What would your notebook say?

  1. Beautiful! And, I'm sooooo glad I selected the right one to vote for. Thanks for sharing your project with the rest of us...I just might do this with my kids' class I teach at a Transitional Housing complex (for formerly homeless families). ~~Robyne~~

  2. I love it, and I voted for you, YAY!

  3. Carmella, this is so lovely. I am a big journal fan and this would probably motivate to write more often. Love the rustic twine and fabric.

  4. I have to say that I. Absolutely. Love. This! So cute!

  5. Love this, what a great idea as a gift to personalize

  6. Brilliant! This is something I will definitely try.

  7. Beautiful! I love the look of printed fabric!

I love comments! I read each and every one of them...thank you for taking the time!
