Lets Talk Turkey

Thanksgiving is this week?

Oh, wait....I guess that shouldn't be a question, but seriously
Thanksgiving is this week??

I've been in the clouds lately.... new baby, craft fairs, and everyday life stuff...
But it's time I got serious because everyone will be here and ready to eat!

source

The menu will be pretty simple.....you know the usual, Turkey, dressing (that's what we call stuffing here in the south), sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, yeast rolls, Derby Pie......

Okay, now I'm hungry!
But what about decor? And activities for everyone?

One fun idea I decided on.... let's finger paint!
Remember when I shared this fun family project

Another fun take on this project.....
paint the form of a tree and let all your guests add a thumb print with acrylic paint to your fall tree....
There we are...prepped and ready to paint
What great family keepsake for years to come!

There are some really fun free printables out there too...like this one from Paper Glitter!
A fun way to keep the little ones busy while the turkey is cooking :)

Now, for the Turkey Day decor....

A simple centerpiece.....

Or something more.....

Wow...now that's a LOT more!

I love this idea of using veggies as candle holders.....

Now, this is more my style!

Well...it looks like I've got a lot of work to do! I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy spending time with friends and family!
I know I have so much to be thankful for this year!

Stay tuned, tomorrow I'll be sharing a round up of Thanksgiving Day printables to share with all of your guests!

Simply Sunday.....

Little Liam....
Oh, how I love that sly smile.
It has become the first thing I see in the morning.....even if morning comes at 2:30 am some days...

Worth more than gold, or precious hours of sleep.....
you make me happy, even when the sun is still sleeping
because you, my sweet boy, are my sunshine....

Kids crafts....And a Visit From My Little Brother

This past Friday we got a fun surprise delivered right to our front door!
craftprojectideas.com sent us an amazing box of supplies so that my kiddo's imaginations could run wild instead of their feet running wild in our house :) And oh, how very grateful I was for that!

sorry for the terrible phone picture, the kids couldn't find it in themselves to wait until I got the camera out!

So much fun! Beads, glitter sticks, bells, rainbow pom poms, colored craft sticks, and glitter, oh my!

We couldn't wait to get started.....

But, wait! I can't say anymore without introducing my little, even though he is taller than me, eleven year old brother, Zeb.

I earned major cool points with him on this particular day...he loves being creative, and to be honest I didn't have anything planned for his visit that day. I was so glad that this super cool box of supplies landed right on our door step...at least I could pretend that it was all part of my plan :)
We decided on Christmas decorations and even fired up the Bing Crosby Holiday album while we crafted....

Aren't they sweet, all hard at work!

Here are a few of the goodies they came up with....

craftprojectideas.com Kids Crafts supplies are available at Wal-Mart and if you visit their website, HERE you can get tons of fun rainy day, holiday, or any old day craft ideas!
Your kids will love you for it...and probably think you are pretty cool too :)
Happy Crafting!

The Voice Behind......Sunny Vanilla

I am so excited about this new series....I just really loved the idea of getting to know some of these fabulous inspiring bloggers. I let you all get to know me a bit more last week, today we get to meet

The voice behind....... Sunny Vanilla

Jen....

I just love the name of your blog, how did you come up with it?

This is a great question!  I remember when I sat down to write my very first blog entry, I decided to talk about my blog name.  Sunny Vanilla is me!  I'm part introvert, part goof ball.  The "sunny" side is my goofy, dorky, wanna make you laugh side while the "vanilla" side is my quiet, laid back, love for libraries side.  I think I just said the word "side" way to many times.

Why did you decide to start blogging?

I actually started with a personal family blog when we had our daughter.  It was a place for me to keep track of all her accomplishments, milestones, and all the in between stuff that she'll want to read one day when she's my age.  Because I also love to sew and craft, I decided to start writing a second blog...enter Sunny Vanilla.

What is your favorite DIY project that you have shared on your blog?

I have a couple, but I would have to say my milk carton rings upcycle project.

Oh, I love that one too!

Where do you find your inspiration?

I find inspiration everywhere - people's clothing, the fabric store, TV, other blogs, books, magazines, thrift stores...etc.  I think inspiration is all around us.

When did you open your  Etsy shop? Have you had a good experience with it so far?

I just opened my Etsy shop in July.  I'm still very much a newbie with Etsy.  I'd like to get to a point where I can do some advertising on other blogs, but right now, I'm building up my products.  I'd like to have that in place before I take it to the next level.

What type of items do you sell in your shop? Will you be adding new items?

I sell diaper bags, diaper bag rolls, and makeup rolls.  The diaper bags are my newest venture, but I will also be adding a couple other things in the next month.

Bag, tote, floral print, carry on under 100

Diaper Bag Roll - The Hopscotch

I love the diaper bags you have added...they are so stylish!

When did you learn to sew, who taught you?

I actually learned to sew in college, but it didn't last because my mom's old machine would always conk out on me.  It wasn't until recently, when I started to stay at home with my daughter, that I really taught myself how to make things.  My dad found a Brother sewing machine at a garage sale and I've been addicted ever since.

What was your first sewing project? Did it work out (or in my case) was it an epic fail?

My first sewing project was a skirt for a swing dance {remember when swing music made a semi-comeback in the late 90's} that I was going to with my boyfriend.  I wanted it to be nice and big and twirly so I could really cut a rug on the dance floor.  Well, it was a total fail.  I actually wore it, but it had to be taken in with safety pins on both
sides of me.  I have no idea how I came up with the dimensions for it ;-)

What do you gain from being a part of the blogging world....have you had a good experience from it?

I think for most people, what they want to gain from blogging is recognition of some sort.  Whether it's to promote a shop or to share a creative idea.  For me personally, I would love for something to come of all this hard work.  I'm not sure what it is yet, but I'm having fun figuring it out!

and for my favorite question.....

What do you hope people say about you behind your back? (haha.... not to sound obsessed with what people think, but I tend to think about this from time to time and hope that I come across the right way, you know?)

Behind my back?  I hope they're sayin', "Man I like her!"  Ha!  In all seriousness, I hope people think I'm genuinely a kind person.  If my daughter grows up knowing that people think of her mom as a good, kind person, then I couldn't ask for much more.

Well, Jen...I can safely say, "Man I like her!"
Thanks so much for letting us get to know you better and hear the voice behind Sunny Vanilla!

I look forward to getting to know more of you out here in blog land, so stay tuned for more from the "Voice Behind...." series!
Man, I am so nosey sometimes, haha!

Calling All Coupon Users.....

As a stay at home mom, I've learned to be pretty creative with saving our family money. The number one way I love to save is by using coupons....so when a wonderful lady by the name of Hilani did a facebook giveaway of one of her awesome hands free coupon organizers I was SO excited!!!

But wouldn't you know.....I didn't win

I'll be honest, I was pretty bummed...but when I saw that a great friend of mine won I was so happy for her. AND when I got an email from Hilani telling me that this same friend asked that the coupon organizer be sent to me instead.....then I was really HAPPY! What an oh so sweet thing to do, so I have promised her I will put it to good use!
Isn't is beautiful!!

Handmade By Hilani has so many great things hand sewn to perfection including my hands free coupon organizer. I love it because I can attach it to the handle of my cart and have all of my coupons right in front of me and there is a great front pocket to place all the coupons I am using at the check out that day! I can't tell you how many times I have left the store without using one of my coupons because I forgot it or it got lost in the shuffle, now I have a place to keep them all together and ready to save money! To a mom with three kiddos in tow this may just be the greatest money saving invention ever :)

Here are some of my other favorites from Handmade by Hilani and a few of my couponing tips too!

This To-Go drink sleeve would make a perfect teacher gift!
The precious cargo cover is perfect for cold winter days

Great stuff, right? And her prices are so reasonable! Some items are even available for wholesale and are sold in stores....be sure to stop by and say hi if you have any questions or would like a custom order :)

And now for a few of my couponing tips ....
One of the things I do a lot is email the companies of the products we use most. I have received lots of coupons for free products just because I took the time to tell them thanks for making a great product.

Another tip would be to "like" the facebook pages of the products you use also. Many companies offer coupons that you can print exclusively for their facebook fans.

Also use couponing resources like Southern Savers, Couponing to Disney, or Frugal Fabulous Finds to help you find the best deals when using your coupons. These sites have done all the hard work of matching coupons to the sale prices and they even tell you where you can get free products just by matching your coupons with a sell!
A big thank you to Handmade By Hilani for my super stylish coupon organizer, I'll be the coolest couponing mom at the store!

Simply Sunday...A Conversation With My Boy....

"Momma?"

Hey buddy, what's up?

" Thank you for always being so nice to me."

Well, you are pretty easy to be nice to. Thank you for being so nice to me.

" You're welcome and if you ever need me I am right here in your heart, okay?"

Yes you are....right here in my heart.

"And I can feel you beeping in my heart too momma."

That's so sweet Bryce, I love you so much.

" I love you too momma."

Hey...where are you going?

" I'm going to go watch some Power Rangers now."

Oh, my goodness...I just love that kid.....

The Voice Behind....Creative Carmella

I have been thinking of how much I love blogging, it has been such a creative outlet to me. I have learned so much about myself since I started blogging in March.....it really is amazing how much it has meant to me. One of the things I never expected to gain from blogging would be making so many new friends. As a stay at home mom, having daily interaction with real adults has done wonders for my well being. Hopefully, I am not the only weirdo that feels this way.

I started thinking of how fun it would be to get to know some other bloggers a bit more. You know, what they are really about and what made them want to join this blogging world in the first place. So, I will be starting a series called "The Voice Behind......."
We all have a story

And I guess I should start with
 mine

Well, as you may have guessed from the name of this blog, I consider myself to be a bit creative. Others have told me this, but honestly I never did really believe them. I just knew that when I was being creative in any way...I was happy. I mean the kind of happy that makes all the stuff you worry about just go away.
I was this creative girl for a very long time and some where in the middle of taking care of kids, our home and all the other things that tend to pile up in life, I forgot how to be creative. I sort of lost who I was, you know.
I didn't realize that all the normal stresses of life were really bogging me down. I thought this was normal to everyone and I would think, "one day, once the kids are big enough, I will get back to doing some things for me."
Well, what happens when you put yourself on the back burner of life for too long, in my case anyway, one day it all becomes too much.
One day last December, after a morning of rushing around with the kids, I got home and had my very first panic attack.
At the time I had no idea what was happening to me. I thought, "this is it, I'm having a heart attack!".  It was scary enough for me to call my mother in law and tell her I needed to go hospital. She called my husband and told him he needed to come home from work to meet us at the hospital. After seeing the ER doctor, have heart monitors placed all over me, and a chest X-ray to rule out anything too serious, the very sweet doctor told me that I had experienced a panic attack.
This shocked me for some reason.....and as I tried to listen to her, in the back of my mind I was worried. Not about myself but I was worried for my two children, that I was here in the hospital and I wasn't the one taking care of them. I worried that I had caused my husband to have to leave work. I was just worried.
You would have thought this was my "ah ha" moment, but it wasn't.
That came much later.
I went to see my doctor...I cried in his office so much that I was sure he was going to have me committed right then and there, but he didn't. What he did say was, "you have to start taking care of YOU or you will have nothing left to give to anyone else."
Hmm...there's a thought. But how would I do that? I still have so much to do.
After a few months of sleepless nights and very long and tiring days...I found myself praying. A lot. I prayed that God would use this experience to teach me more about myself. I prayed that He would give me something bigger that what I was going through so I could find my joy again. I needed to be reminded to take care of ME.
Two weeks later I found out I was pregnant. Baby number three! How in the world was I going to do this??

But then my "ah ha" moment came....I have to take care of myself, my body and my mind because there was someone else in here now. God was teaching me how to take better care of ME because he had given me a baby that I couldn't see or touch yet. The only way I could take care of this little baby was by taking care of ME.....amazing how He works, right?

So....that was a really LONG way of telling you why I started blogging in the first place. I simply needed to find myself again. I needed to be creative and get back to that place of pure happy when all the other stuff just seems to go away.

I bet you didn't know why your comments and sweet words of encouragement meant so much to me....now you know :)
And I thank you....I don't doubt for one single second that God placed you all in my life for a purpose.
Thanks for following along is this creative journey of mine.......

Three Great Uses For Leftover Halloween Candy.....

Halloween is over? Really? The days are going by in a blur...life with a now 6 week old baby does that to you I guess (can you believe our little man is already 6 weeks old??)

Anyway...Halloween is now over...our kiddos made out with a huge amount of loot and to save myself them from eating it all, I thought I would research a few ways to get rid of some of it.

1. Operation Shoe Box is a great way to help put a smile on a deployed soldier's face. It was amazing to hear that so many of our troops will be coming home from Iraq soon, but there are still many more that won't be spending the holidays with their families. Operation Shoe Box was founded in 2003 in an effort to send support, snacks and much needed personal care items to our troops. Candy is one of the top items that they send out, many of the soldiers give the candy to children where they are stationed so you can send all of your non-chocolate candy items to them and they will send it to the soldiers for you!

2. How about using candy in recipes for your holiday baking?? Here are a couple of recipes that I may just be trying out really soon...
Peanut Butter cookies with Chopped Peanut Butter Cups

Pretzel Kisses

3. And remember to save the wrappers for some really cute, crafty projects....

Starburst Wrapper Bracelet

starburst bracelet!

Candy Wrapper Button Earrings

Candy Wrapper Light Switch Plates

Sweet, right?

What do you do with all of your kiddos Halloween candy...well, besides eating it while they are in bed like I do...just kidding, you know I would never, ever do a thing like that ;)
